In this article, I want to explain the difference between SMP ink and tattoo ink and their usage in each industry.
In some ways, Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) may be similar to conventional tattooing, however, there are key differences that distinguish a professional SMP technique from permanent makeup and tattoos. One of the crucial differences is the experience and knowledge of artists to achieve consistent results and create a three-dimensional appearance of hair follicles. Here, we intend to consider the differences one by one.
Using scalp micropigmentation needles, pigments are implanted with exceptional precision and delicacy using a pattern similar to hair growth in the dermis layer of the head.
In conventional tattoo techniques, the ink is injected beneath the dermis layer of the skin which causes fading or spreading of the pigments (not bad, the nature of that). Instead, the SMP ink is implanted with a special delicacy in the dermis layer of the head and settled in a fixed place.

The scalp is different from the skin in other parts of the body due to the presence of a thin layer of the fat and absence of muscles.
Everyone's scale is unique and has a specific resistance against the needle due to the following reasons:
The amount of fat under and the skin
Depth and type of wounds
Skin's elasticity and the collagen tissue in the scalp
Therefore, we are saying the artist's level of proficiency is really important because an experienced artist can easily find the appropriate pressure and depth after poking a few needles.
Different Methods need different inks:
By a simple search on Google, you can find out SMP, eyebrow tattoo, eyeliner, body tattoo, lip blush, etc. how their own specific inks separately.
It is interesting to know that even there are different inks for various tattoo techniques in a specific part of the body. The best example is the brows tattoo. Microblading, shading, and powder ombre brows, which are all subsets of eyebrow tattoos, have their own pigments and are sold separately.
In scalp micropigmentation, the colour basically should match the hair and skin of each client. The pigments' colour for scalp micropigmentation should be combined and made for each client based on their skin colour. Besides, paying attention to the skin spectrum colour of each client for the composition of the pigments, it is also important to pay attention to the colour of the eyebrows and facial hairs' roots.
In addition, the SMP inks should be diluted at first and then could be used on the scalp but it is not necessary for the other kind of tattoos. For instance, the permanent makeup pigments are oil-based and cannot be mixed with water.
All types of tattoo inks are safe if they are purchased from authorized suppliers. However, some tattoo ink brands, which are used in non-professional centers, are contained high amounts of heavy metals such as Iron, Zinc, Nickel, Chromium, Cobalt, Cadmium, etc. As a result, these pigments tend to turn green, red and blue on the skin in long term.
The SMP inks are free of these elements, which means that the pigments will not break down into blue and green over time and they fade in long term a touch-up is needed for having a fresh look.
Here at MB Elegant Micro, we know the difference between tattoos and SMP inks, and for this reason, we emphasize performing scalp micropigmentation at an authorized center under a trained artist. We are using the best ink which is tested and prepared for SMP purposes. These are organic charcoal-based scalp pigments.
